Another Person Tests Positive to Ebola in Lagos

Another person has tested positive to the Ebola Virus Disease in Lagos.

The Minister of Health, Professor Onyebuchi Chukwu disclosed this in Abuja yesterday.

He identified the person as the fiancé of one of those who had primary a contact with Liberian-American who transmuted the virus to Nigeria, Patrick Sawyer.

This brings total confirmed cases to 19, some 50 days after the virus was first introduced into Nigeria by Sawyer.

The minister explained that the status of the fiancé could not be "categorically confirmed until now, because his test results were equivocal.

Further tests established the disease. He had only mild symptoms and has since recovered from the illness. He was quarantined, but because of the equivocal test result, he was not placed on active treatment."

The latest case is the 19th confirmed case in Nigeria since the virus entered the country in July.

Fifteen of the cases are in Lagos, where 27 people are still on surveillance after some 339 people who completed a mandatory 21 days of observation were released.

Only four people have been confirmed positive for Ebola in Port Harcourt, 38 days after the virus first emerged there.

Some 477 people are being monitored for possible symptoms, including people who had no direct contact with Sawyer, but may have met with secondary contacts.

All cases confirmed are still traceable to Sawyer, health authorities said in hopes of addressing concern.
