Comedy is regarded as one of the best sources of amusement, laughter and joy in the world. Foreign stand-up comedians like Kevin Hart, Jamie Fox, Chris Rock, the late Robin Williams, Jerry Seinfeld, and George Carlin, amongst others, are extremely famous across the world and can be said to be among some of the richest entertainers also. Stand-up comedy has become a source of livelihood for several Nigerians. Even those who are really not that funny have managed to carve a niche for themselves.

In every entertainment line presently, the business angles are now put into serious consideration by performers of the act. In Nigeria, endorsements, acting roles and even political roles are offered to stand-up comedians due to their popularity and the fact they are regarded as a channel of happiness to the sad, sorrowed or depressed.

Some of the untalented stand-up comedians that venture into comedy still try due to the fact that they believe comedy is now lucrative, they tap into it then fall out of it because they fail. Even those with high educational qualification dump their certificate base on the fact stand-up comedy is now a legitimate way of making cool millions and at the same time having fun. While some seem not to be too gifted with the unique act of satire or making an expectant crowd happy and satisfied with humorous jokes, others on the other hand are born with this gift and find it very easy to make any crowd laugh with the slightest attempt given to them.

Lots of comedians now charge their fans heavily to watch and listen to them perform. For instance A.Y LIVE: Happiness Edition of April 24, 2014, the tickets were on sale for N6,000 (Regular), N25,000 (VIP), N500, 000/N1,000,000 (Table for 10). That is how lucrative stand-up comedy has come to be in recent times, and the crowd recorded at such events are always overwhelming the price of the tickets notwithstanding as Nigerians, Caucasians and our brothers in the diaspora never miss the opportunity of hanging out with their loved ones for a good time over a round of hilarious jokes and theatrical satire acts performed by these stand-up comedians.

Before the present financial and social boom of stand-up comedy in the entertainment industry, classic Nigerian drama comedy series, such as Baba Sala, masquerade, the popular Mazi Mperempe programme on Radio Nigeria and old Anambra State Television, Enugu, in the 70s, 80s and early 90s were the only source of contemporary stand-up comedy. Worthy of note is the 30-minute programme on Radio Nigeria in Pidgin which featured Mazi Mperempe dishing out numerous rib cracking jokes, always starting with his popular slogan “Oluo n’onume…… onye agbana oso…!” meaning “the time for action has arrived….. Nobody should run away…!”

Stand-up comedy was left unexploited till a certain revolutionist in the mould of Alleuia Atunyota Akporobomeriere, alias Ali Baba came into the picture.

Ali Baba

Ali Baba came to the scene after acquiring a degree in Religious/Philosophy Studies from the then Bendel State University now Ambrose Alli University, Ekpoma in 1990.

He relocated to Lagos having discovered his comic talent and humorous side in his third Year in University. He had planned to return to Ekpoma to read Law but that was not to be, since he discovered he could make more money from making people laugh than from defending them. Though he had little experience having performed in his first show in 1988, at the pavilion of the then Bendel State University, Ekpoma, Ali Baba knew exactly how to go about it. By 1998, Ali registered a company, Ali Baba Hiccupurathird. That year he erected three bill boards at strategic locations in Lagos: Ozumba Mbadiwe Street, Victoria Island; Marina; and Osborn road, Ikoyi, paying as much as N140, 000 for each billboard per year. The billboard carried a simple but heartfelt message: “Ali Baba- Being funny is Serious Business” and that signalled the evolution of stand-up comedy business-wise.

Ali Baba had featured on Friday Night Live, a popular Charly Boy Show and Night Train with Bisi Olatilo on the Network services of the Nigerian Television Authority (NTA). These made him a popular figure with viewers. Guinness decided to take him along on a nationwide tour for the launch of Satzenbrau beer in Nigeria. His contract with Guinness fetched him N1.5 million, his first million gotten from stand-up comedy at that time.

In one of his interviews, he recalled that “the appreciation level of stand-up comedy then was very low because a comedian was always the last on the list of events and the first to go if the event planner decides to cut cost.” It is an undisputed fact that Ali Baba gave stand-up comedy the face it is putting on today and has remained a dominant force in the industry, maintaining his status as the “King of stand up comedy” being the first comedian to be paid well in the country, driving a heavy monster truck, with personalised plates, “Ali Baba 1” and a Dodge Ram, registered as “Ali Baba 2” amongst others.

However, evolution of stand-up comedy to a lucrative business in Nigeria would not be well expatiated without giving credit to Opa Williams, for the development of modern stand-up comedy. Opa Williams, a native of Aradehe in Isoko North local govt of Delta State, had produced movies like Tears for love, Onome, Sergeant Okoro and Mama between 1993 and 1998. He conceptualised “Night of a Thousand Laughs” a public event first held on Sunday, October 1, 1995, at the University of Lagos, Akoka- Lagos. The event was a success theatrically but a massive failure in terms of financial returns, still that did not stop him and he came back with a follow up in 1996, this time with some partners and still encountered some financial recession but he persisted and after much perseverance and repackaging with new sponsors, Opa Williams made Nigerians realise that they had to pay to laugh, he made comedians realise that they can wear designers suits to perform as professionals and he taught comedians that stand-up comedy can be held in high profile venues with high profile personalities attracted to the event with high fees.

With the African fashion industry eyeing more corporates and working hard to maintain a youthful audience worldwide, Ugandan designer Barry Kibwika, the man behind Asst Clothing (Asst pronounced Ah-ss-t) has gone a notch higher to get his brand recognised globally.

Asst Clothing had world-renowned entertainer Chris Brown adorn their outfits while on a guest tour performance at the annual 'Art of Sound Music and Fashion Festival' held recently at Fort Lauderdale, Florida.

Asst Clothing based in Miami, Florida, was founded in 2011 by Barry and his colleague Alexa Morgan and is inspired by originality, royalty, culture, and embraces individuality. The duo's designs from their aesthetic identity appear unique in nature and therefore meant to boost the confidence of the wearer.

"We are very unapologetic in our designs as we're guided by our brand's theme 'Embrace the royalty in you' and eventually get inspired by many cultures because they do not try to conform to society with their way of dress. Asst is more than a brand, it is a way of life," said Kibwika.

Asst Clothing has been identified in the American audience to be popular for bringing lightness and the feeling of exotic elegance with its royal garments. It would be described as cultural, effortlessly sophisticated looks to the modern day era.

Given unfolding scenarios and growing endorsements for the return of President Goodluck Jonathan to the Aso Villa seat of government, come 2015, Nigerians may not have to wait for an elaborate open-declaration ceremony by the President.

What is certain, however, is that Jonathan will make all the necessary political statements when collecting his form, from Wadata House, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) secretariat.

Following the many groups endorsing him to join the 2015 presidential race, an elaborate ceremony may, after all, not be held, but picking a form for the presidential contest is no doubt a certainty.

With few months to the 2015 General Elections, the tempo of political activities gathering momentum for the return of Jonathan to the Aso Villa has been enormous, despite the fact that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) is yet to lift the ban on campaigns, as stipulated by the Electoral Act.

Politicians and interest groups under various nomenclatures, such as support groups and Non-Governmental Organisations, have not hidden their desire to continue rallying support for the President, whose intention to re-contest for the highest office in the country is yet to be made formal.

Some of such groups canvassing for Jonathan have gone as far as raising money to pay for the expression of interest form for the President, while other groups are taking mobilisation to all the six geo political zones of the country, collecting signatures, in their interest in having the President run for a second term

A Cornell University professor says when responding to the West Africa Ebola epidemic, officials must consider both the physical and social dimensions of healing. Stacey Langwick said the outbreak has dramatically changed the way people care for the sick.

Langwick is studying the Ebola crisis through the eyes of a medical anthropologist – someone, she said, is most interested in “behaviour at the intersection of culture, humanity and biology.”

“We’re very interested in how people think about their bodies. How they’re thinking about diseases. How they’re thinking about threats and what sorts of action or responses come from those conceptions about diseases and threats,” she said.

The Ebola outbreak in Guinea, Liberia, Sierra Leone and Nigeria is a medical emergency. But Langwick said there’s more than one dimension to it.

“When we focus only on the very important scientific questions and biological questions of the origins of this disease -- its population dynamics, its spread – we may come up with a set of interventions that look very effective on paper in relation to containing the virus, but they’re completely ineffective on the ground.”

Past Ebola outbreaks in Africa were often over in a matter of weeks and occurred in small areas. Infected people were quickly isolated and the outbreak ended when the dying stopped. But this outbreak crossed porous borders – has been going on for months -- and the dying and new infections continue.

Langwick said: “Part of what we’re seeing is our intense inter-connectedness in today’s world. People travel. People need to travel to make their livelihoods, to get food, to see relatives, to care for each other, for their jobs and their profession. And I think we’re seeing a very effective and devastating virus take advantage of the fact that we are a very inter-connected world.”

The Cornell professor said when people live in an area with poor health care, surrounded by death and the fear of death, it is an infuriating and terrifying situation. That’s made worse, she said, when areas are placed under quarantine -- like the West Pointe area of Liberia’s capital Monrovia – with little or no warning or education campaigns about Ebola.

“The current violence in Monrovia really shows us that if we do not do that what will then be required is force and violence in a situation -- where there’s already so much loss, heartache and death – that adding to it is not what anyone is hoping will happen.”

She said that it’s a question of how do we care for the people we love, especially in the face of danger. She described it as the ethics of living, the ethics of caring.

Even the way people mourn the death of their loved ones has changed in the affected countries. No longer, said health officials, can people touch dead bodies during funerals.

The professor said, “How can we actually make a meaningful grieving practice together? And parts of that grieving practice might have to be new. And traditions are very strong and so they’re not easy to break. But part of what can be a real drawback of highly focused public health interventions is they tell people what not to do, but they do not take the time to imagine with people what they can do. “

Effective interventions, Langwick said, are more easily accepted when their based on consultations with a broad range of community members.

She added that working with traditional healers may help, as long as those healers are fully aware of the risks of Ebola.

“Good healers are skillful in conceiving and promoting therapies that intervene in the dynamics of both biological diseases and human relationships,” she said.

More than 1,400 people have died of Ebola in West Africa.

Nigeria Minister of Health, Professor Onyebuchi Chukwu has announced that two more Nigerians have been infected with the deadly Ebola Virus Disease.

The Minister said the two new cases are spouses of medical personnel who had contacts with Liberian-America Patrick Sawyer, Nigeria’s first index case.

The two patients thus became the first secondary contacts to test positive for the deadly virus in Nigeria.

Nigeria has put all the secondary contacts of those who had contacts with Sawyer on surveillance since the death of the Liberian American, Sawyer, was discovered to be infected with the disease two days after his admission at First Consultant Clinic, Lagos last month.

He had taken ill immediately on arrival at Murtala Mohammed International Airport, Lagos and was taken to the hospital for treatment. 11 Nigerians contracted the disease directly from him.

These two new cases bring the total number of confirmed infections in Nigeria, including the traveller, to 14.

The minister noted that of the patients have died, five have recovered and four are being treated in Lagos.

Libya pulled out last week because of ongoing fighting in the country that has delayed plans to build new stadiums for the 16-team tournament.

Ethiopia, who hosted the tournament in 1962, 1968 and 1976, say they will submit their proposal immediately.

Ethiopia Football Federation president Junedin Basha said "We already have two ready venues, the Addis Ababa and the Bahir Dar stadiums, and the construction of the other venues has also reached to a good level.

"Our government is ready and interested to do everything it can to bring the tournament back to Ethiopia."

Kenya said in a statement that they are also considering a joint bid with Tanzania or Uganda or Rwanda.

And later on Tuesday, Ghana sports minister wrote on his twitter page  "I am happy to announce that Ghana will bid to host the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations."

The Confederation of African Football has set a deadline of 30 September for countries to express their interest in hosting the tournament.

Everton boss Roberto Martinez said of Eto'o: "I met him and we had a very good chat. I was impressed about the hunger he still has.

"We are very excited and I think Everton is the perfect home for him."

Eto'o's contract with Chelsea expired at the start of July and he was not offered fresh terms by Blues boss Jose Mourinho.

Liverpool were in the running to sign him but instead opted for Mario Balotelli, leaving Martinez free to bring Eto'o to Goodison Park.

A 29 -year old- man has been arrested by the Anambra State police command for killing and roasting his mother in Ndikpa Awuka, a community in Orumba South local government area of the state.

The suspect, Ekene Ucheagwu, killed 65- year- old Agnes Ucheagwu in May, accusing her of using witchcraft to prevent the family’s progress.

The police  spokesman in the state, Uche Ezeh, a deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP), told reporters at the office of the Special Anti- Robbery Squad (SAR) in Awkuzu that the suspect would face the full wrath of the law.

He said the suspect committed the crime after he was released at Umuchukwu police station for beating the woman mercilessly.

In his confession on Tuesday, Ucheagwu admitted that he killed his mother, alleging that the woman prevented the progress of her children and indeed that of the family.

According to him, his elder brother, aged 45, is still unmarried because of their “mother’s witchcraft and curses on the children.”

He said, “My mother was evil, I killed her because of her wickedness. This incident happened in May. She prevented good things coming to her children.

“She was a witch, she put curses on us not to progress. Others were blindfolded because of our mother’s witchcraft. Because I was the only that knew her plans, she was always attacking me.

“I killed her because she planned to kill me because I called her ‘Queen of the coast’ (her spiritual name). But I had to act fast and kill her first.

“My mother was a witchcraft living in the sky, I killed her and burnt her body in the bush called Ogbukwu with fuel and firewood.”

Official estimates place the number of known, suspected and probable cases of Ebola at nearly 2,500, just over half of which have been fatal. However, in a detailed assessment of the true extent of the crisis, the WHO described a bleak situation in which “an invisible caseload of patients… are not being detected by the surveillance system”.

Recording of Ebola cases has been hindered for a number of reasons, particularly in Sierra Leone and Liberia, which have seen the worst of the epidemic, the WHO said in its latest situation report.

Families are hiding infected loved ones, on the assumption that, because Ebola has no cure, it would be better for them to die at home rather than in hospital. However, effective treatment can improve chances of survival  – a message that health authorities have been struggling to communicate to increasingly fearful populations.

There are plenty of talented women in South Africa's burgeoning music scene. But a woman playing drums in a heavy metal band is still a rarity. Yet that's exactly how Courtney Gibson, 24, is making a name for herself. She fronts Johannesburg-based band, Mizera, that plays death and thrash metal, two highly aggressive subgenres of heavy metal, typically using distorted guitars, deep, growled vocals and supercharged drumbeats. A blue haze of smoke engulfs the crowd at a music festival in Mpumalanga Province. The stage is swathed in purple light. Three big men dressed in black denim and leather step forward, wielding droning electric guitars. They launch a tidal wave of sound. One concert-goer - bearded, adorned with multiple tattooes and silver nose-rings - exclaims when he realizes the drummer is woman. Courtney Gibson's long brunette hair cascades over her thin arms in a blur as she pounds the drums at furious speed. She's living her childhood dream of being a metal bland drummer. "I started listening to Metallica and a lot of old school stuff. I really liked Led Zeppelin and Black Sabbath," she explains. " I just really loved the drums. I always thought the drums were like an awesome instrument and I always had a feeling for it... " At age 16, Gibson's parents helped her buy her first drum kit. The family lived on a game farm at the time. "So it was like the only house in the middle of the bush and I had this drum kit and I used to just play every single day, just jam on my own," she muses. Gibson says people at Mizera gigs are always "shocked" when they realize it's a woman on drums. "They kind of sit and watch the first song and you just like see their mouths just like drop and they're like, 'What? Whenever I get off the drum kit, everyone's like, ... You don't play like a girl!'" she chuckles. Giibson doesn't see herself as a female drummer, just as a drummer. "I don't really register that I'm different to the guys. I just play and feel the music," she says. "Other people are like, 'Oh, how do you play like that, you're so tiny!' I'm like, 'I don't know, I just play,'" she laughs. " It's weird when people are like, 'Oh, you're a girl.' So?" And it is not just that Gibson is a drummer but in this kind of band that throws people. Many here consider death and thrash metal to be negative, promoting violence and even Satanism. But Gibson is adamant the music she makes with Mizera is positive. "It's kind of just sending out a message of good. It's not anything evil at all. I'm actually a Christian... " she says, adding that the band's songs celebrate individuality. "The one song that I wrote is pretty much about not being trapped in yourself, like just letting yourself be yourself, letting your soul free. It's called 'Prison of Flesh'. It's like being who you are and not being trapped inside your own flesh." Gibson is anything but trapped - she says playing the drums frees her and allows her to demonstrate how happy she is just being herself, regardless of what people may think of her or her music.

Olushola Babajide Aloba Bakare aka Jydo, is a graduate of Mass Communications from Olabisi Onabanjo University where he finishedin 2007. After a brief stay in the United Kingdom he was forced by circumstances to come back home where he once again found his voice to sing. He has a number of singles and videos to his name.

He calls his kind of music 'High-grade, a blend of highlife but Jydo has a different perspective on what music should be about and he shares his thoughts with our reporter. Hear him:

Tell us what motivated you to choose the path of Music

Well, I love music and I believe music is my destiny and I don't see myself doing anything else. I chose music because I think it is a gift God gave me. And with my own style of music, I believe I will be able to carve a niche for myself.

What has your experience in the Nigerian music industry been like?

It has not been easy. I came back to Nigeria in 2009 and I ve been doing a lot since I came back from the UK. It wasn't easy coming down here and trying to understand the system.

When did you start this profession?

Professionally, I've been doing music for seven years now and it's been great. But sometimes I get to hear a lot of people saying that my kind of music is for the old mind, but I just believe music is for everybody. When you hear good music, you should mean something to you.

How do you get inspiration?

Inspiration comes from what I see around me, what I feel in my mind and what has happened to me.

For instance, in 2009, I lost my mum and my two brothers to fire disaster in my house and I was in England at the moment and I had to come down to Nigeria immediately the next morning to take over the family business . So with that, I try to express myself through my songs. And if not that we have bad governance I wouldn't have lost my family to that fire disaster because there was nobody to help . So indirectly life hasn t been fair to me

How has the journey been so far, and what do you think about the music industry?

The journey has been great and I look forward to the future to bring better things. And talking about my experience, I think I've had a lot of experience both personally and from people. For instance, if you look into the music industry, people don't seem to do what is known as music aside from having a good producer.

But when it comes to content, I don't believe music should be something that everybody will have to dance to or using cheap lyrics in your songs but it should be something that can be played in the next decades. And there is this Nigerian mentality that once you have a good beat you have a good song. No, it shouldn't be. Though good beat sells these days but music is more than just the beat. I don't see music as a way of making money because it's better to do a song that can be played forever .

Why did you leave UK to do music in Nigeria?

I didn't leave Uk to Nigeria because of music, I relocated from Uk to Nigeria because I lost my mum and my siblings to take over our family business . And before I left Uk, I was doing music but it was on a low-key.

1. Top on the list is the amendment of Article 203(2) of the constitution to increase the minimum allocation to the counties from 15 per cent to 45 per cent of the national Budget.

2. The governors also want to strengthen the Senate's role by divorcing its functions from those of the National Assembly and giving senators the final say on county matters.

3.The county chiefs also want the national command structures restructured so as to create a role for counties in security matters.

4. The governors also want the role for counties in the management of the environment, forestry, land and natural resources.

5. They want the recall/impeachment of leaders to be based on a "uniform law, which respects due process".

6. The governors demand the creation of a "clearing house for legislation that will determine the character of the law and the process it has to go through for its enactment so as to avoid and put a stop to legislation that negates devolution".

7. They want the constitution to provide for the formation of a Loans and Grants Council to "guarantee equity between the two levels of government".

8. The Equalisation Fund should be converted into a County Government Fund to be administered by the Commission on Revenue Allocation on the basis of a scientific framework.

9. The governors want members of the county assemblies to enjoy similar privileges as their colleagues in the National Assembly and the Senate.

10.They also want to have separate gazettement of laws of the national and county governments.

Duale Tells Jubilee Governors to Stop Referendum Calls or Face the Music

Majority Leader in the National Assembly Aden Duale on Saturday warned governors in Jubilee coalition to stop supporting the referendum push...

In every epoch, there are fashion enthusiasts who discover all of a sudden that a particular trend has become outdated and thus incongruent with the times. Many attempt to rebel and gloriously establish themselves as trend-setters; however, more often than not, the latter divide end up muddling trendsetting with a personal problem or shortcoming - which leads them to commit what many fashion buffs would readily identify or label as a fashion faux pas.

Hardly anyone would accuse the First Lady of Nigeria, Dame Patience Jonathan, of fashion handicaps but not a few people have come out to condemn Dame Patience's fashion gaffe at a recent social function. It is no secret that the First Lady of Nigeria loves fashion and she does not try to hide it. At official and non-official functions, she tries to look her best. Although she has been criticized several times for making wrong fashion choices, she does not seem deterred by the opinion of her critics.

Recently, one of her pictures has been trending on the social media. In the picture, she is seen wearing what looks like a pair of reading glasses while a sunshade dangles from her dress at her bosom region. While many have risen to her defense by saying both serve two different purposes, others are of the opinion that the other, which was not in use, could have been tucked away in its case while awaiting usage.
