In the national broadcast, which was relayed on national television and radio networks to herald the New Year, the president also assured Nigerians that political campaigns and the 2015 general election would not distract his administration from its ongoing effort to significantly improve their living conditions.

President Goodluck Jonathan has vowed to shield the poor and low-medium income earners from the full brunt of measures included in the 2015 budget.

This, he said, was to ensure the stability of the national economy in the face of the current downturn in the prices of crude oil.

“By the Special Grace of God, the Federal Government, under my leadership, has continued in the past four years to lead our country forward, even under the most trying circumstances. The progress we have made in priority areas bears us testimony.

“Our national economy maintained a steady growth rate of close to seven per cent in the past four years and millions of fresh employment opportunities were created for our people as a direct consequence.

“Being very conscious of the inherent perils of our over-reliance on income from crude oil exports for national development, we have focused on accelerating the diversification of our economy.

“The non-oil sector, which has grown by an average of 8 per cent in the last few years, is now a major driver of growth in our economy.

“The 2015 national budget, which is now before the National Assembly, is targeted at deepening our efforts at becoming a non-oil economy.

“The budget also includes measures to ensure that the downturn in the price of oil does not affect our development plans and our national economy too adversely. We are adjusting our financial processes to safeguard our economy. We are also taking steps to ensure that the poor and the low and medium income earners do not bear the brunt,” he said.

He assured that the administration would continue to lay the foundation for a vibrant economy that attracted significant Foreign Direct Investment and promoted policies that ensure economic stability.

“We will ensure stability in the value of the Naira by striving to take away speculative behaviours that cause market exchange pressures.

“We will continue to build and maintain a healthy external reserves position and strengthen fiscal buffers. We will ensure the Naira remains strong and gives foreign investors the clarity and certainty that they need, to guide future investment decisions.

“We will continue to improve our payment systems and strengthen risk-based supervision mechanism for Nigerian banks to ensure overall health and stability of the banking system,” President Jonathan said.

The president reassured Nigerians and the global community of his resolute commitment to free, fair, credible and acceptable elections.

He also warned that that firm and decisive action would be taken against any individuals or groups who attempted to disrupt the public peace before, during or after the 2015 elections.

“The elections are very important to us as a country. Their successful conclusion will further strengthen our democratic institutions and place our beloved country even more firmly in the comity of truly democratic nations.

“I reassure all Nigerians and the international community of our firm commitment to free, fair and credible elections. My commitment to free elections and one man, one vote remains unwavering,” he said.

Speaking to politicians, Jonathan said “none of our political ambitions is worth the blood of any of our countrymen, women and children. The improvement of their lives and living conditions ought to be our primary motive and the driving force of our quest for political power and leadership positions.

“Let us not promote sectionalism, disunity, intolerance, hate, falsehood or the malicious abuse of political opponents. Whatever we feel or seek, we must have a nation and a people before we can dream of political ambitions. Let us put the nation and the people first.”

While wishing Nigerians a happy and prosperous 2015, the president urged them to enter the New Year with renewed hope, patriotism and zeal to serve their fatherland.

“As I have always maintained, none of the challenges before us is insurmountable. We must come together as a people and work with single-minded unity of purpose to overcome them,” he added.

I know I’m usually not the first to praise our President. I believe he has staff paid to praise him, I’m a citizen of Nigeria and demand good governance. I think many Nigerians may think they don’t deserve better, but I think we deserve better. I have benefited from this country, even as poorly run as we have criticised that it has been – my education is purely a testimony of the success of the public sector, and I do not take that lightly.

Today, I want to take a more practical approach. Those who know me a little well, know that throwing punches and criticising any government for me is merely satire. I believe that power is not man made, men vote, but God decides. The only reason we can have a country ever run by the likes of our current president is clear signs that providence decides. Our country has shown this over and over again. We have had presidents straight from prison, and had a democratic president without any election. In this submission, I understand that President Goodluck Jonathan became and has stayed the president of Nigeria by the will of God. I do not however believe in “Vox Populi Vox Dei”, many times God speaks whether the people speak contrary or stay mute.

Now to the matter of fairness to President Goodluck Jonathan. How has Nigeria faired under him during his 6 year rule, reign or leadership. Are there things that he has achieved that are undeniable? Are there areas that need improvement? Has he been naughty or nice and does he deserve a gift from this Santa?

There are clear achievements that President Goodluck Jonathan popularly known as GEJ has achieved which cannot be taken from him. While there are lists of plenty of things the president has achieved, the parameter for me, is what affects our lives, and what we can truly measure. Here are my list of 5 things that President Goodluck Jonathan has done well.

1. Agriculture – The current government has achieved significant milestones in agriculture that cannot be pushed aside. There is the criticism of all talk and less action, but those are just critics who must criticise. 40% reduction in food imports, cassava production output records and agricultural transformation are clear records by this administration.

2. Youth Entrepreneurship – The initiation of the YouWin was a novel idea of channeling funds in a direction that has the capacity to jumpstart a portion of the market. The actual impact value of this is currently inconclusive, but the benefit to those who won is quite significant.

3. Aliko Dangote’s Networth Increase – Aliko Dangote experienced a 1,000% increase in Networth under the Goodluck Jonathan administration. This shows that the administrations policies were favourable. At least to a market demographic.

4. Infrastructure Development – 9 Universities were started, a few airports too. The rail way system is being revived (25yrs project), a number of federal roads are being beautified and some constructed. The administration was characterised by projects. Only the blind would claim not to notice the volume of projects that sprang up around airports, roads, bridges e.t.c.

5. Others – This constitute of a mixture of varieties, ranging from Women in the ministries, good luck in winning African cup of nations and medals in the Commonwealth games. Part of the others is the growth in the Nollywood industry and so many others.

It would be grossly unfair to the President to gloss over this and go straight into complaining about the misadventures of the administration and the things that they didn’t do well. The president does not have a magic wand and he honestly cannot give what he doesn’t have. No government however is made up of one person, so it’s the collaboration with diverse people that makes a good government. President Goodluck Jonathan has given Nigeria and Nigerians his best shot.

It is true that the tenure had not been without it’s own fair share of challenges. There have been clear lapses and gaps, and times when one wonders if truly there is no deliberate sabotage going on from within to discredit the President. Haven led us for 6 years however, we have a golden opportunity, to try someone else or to continue with the foundation that has been laid.

What does Nigeria need? A new CEO or a new Chairman of the board. The problems we have are real, not imagined. Terror has taken abode on our soil, and desperate issues call out for desperate solutions. GEJ is a great man and he has not done badly. We however have issues of Boko Haram, Bomb blasts here and there, missing monies, corruption, stealing, and so much more. In these times, we don’t need someone who may, we need someone who can. We don’t need who can do the job well, we need who can do the job better. It’s not about individuals, it’s about the future of our country.

So while today I concede to you that Goodluck Jonathan is good, I restate my position that General Muhammadu Buhari is better! Not by analysing their mistakes, but looking at their antecedents and the things they have achieved, and to report based on that. Based on this submission, I state that we are not voting the best of two evils, but the best of two good men. One branded with integrity, and the other with inclusion.

My position is Sai Mai Gaskiya! Gaskiya Dokin Karfe. It has nothing with what GEJ hasn’t done well, it’s based on the hope that rises in my heart, when I realise that the greatest enemy of Nigeria is not anyone in particular, but primarily self interest. I am pleasantly amazed by Buhari’s abnegation and I desire that we have a leader who can indeed lead and inspire change!

Let’s Be Fair on President Goodluck Jonathan

It is an innovative first from the pan-African bank and currently the only bank in Africa to offer this service.

Customers of United Bank for Africa (UBA) Plc in the 18 African countries where the bank has operations can now receive transaction alerts on their twitter handle as direct messages.

“What we have done is take social media banking to a new level. Twitter is increasingly becoming a popular means of communication especially among the young adults. As a highly innovative bank, we are giving the Millennials, who are increasingly banking with us an option to get transaction alerts on their preferred platform” said Rasheed Adegoke, UBA’s Director, Information Technology.

Before now customers can only receive transaction alerts as text messages on their mobile phones and as e-mails.

The UBA Twitter Notification Service will not however, replace the current SMS alerts system in place for all of the bank’s customers, but will complement it for added convenience for all those who subscribe to the service.

UBA customers seeking to receive twitter powered transaction alerts through their twitter account should visit the UBA Group website or the UBA twitter page to register.

On the UBA Group website, customers will be requested to click on the Twitter notification service page, and enter their account number then click on submit. Follow the displayed instructions to log into their personal account and enable access. Once this process is completed, the customer will start receiving transaction alerts securely.

The alerts will only be seen by the receiver, since it goes into his or her direct message box, just like an SMS message going to a phone.

The introduction of this service reinforces UBA’s growing presence and engagement with its numerous customers on social media. UBA has been acknowledged as one of Nigeria’s leading banks in the social media space.

In February 2014, a social media report by Alder Consulting ranked the bank among the top three, in effective use of social media in Nigeria. UBA is active on Twitter, Facebook, Youtube, Instagram and Google plus and runs a corporate blog.

With a customer base in excess of seven million, UBA has invested heavily in building a robust and secure e-Banking platform that supports its e-banking operations globally through strategic partnerships with various local and international organizations.

The name of Hakeem Olajuwon readily comes to mind whenever basketball is being discussed in the United States of America and beyond, especially after his successes with the Houston Rockets. But beyond ‘The Dream’, another Nigerian – Masai Ujiri, has broken the barriers and rose to the position of the General Manager of NBA Club – Toronto Raptors, the first by an African.

In 2012-13 season, he was voted the NBA Executive of the Year.

Ujiri was in the country to organise his yearly Giant of Africa/Nestle Top-50 Basketball Camp for boys and girls, which has been on now for over a decade. In an interview with Kunle Adewale he gave an insight into some of the achievements of the camp so far.

After ending a professional playing career in 2002, Masai Ujiri worked as a youth coach in Nigeria. But it was during a National Basketball Association summer league game in Boston that he met David Thorpe, who introduced him to college coaches. He started accompanying young Nigerian players to draft tryout in Orlando when he impressed scouting director, Gary Brokaw, who then introduced him to Coach Doc Rivers and General Manager, John Gabriel.

He then became an unpaid scout for Orlando Margic paying his own way when he had to and sharing rooms with scouts or players when he could.

Later Jeff Weltman, then a young Nuggets executive, introduced him to Nuggets General Manager, Kiki Vandewehe, who then hired Ujiri on salary as an international scout.

“Denver Nuggets took a chance on me and it thus came a time when this opportunity was so big and it put me on some form of a stage, where I can affect basketball a little bit more, especially on the continent here. I had a great run in Nuggets; they gave me an unbelievable opportunity to be a first time General Manager,” he recalled.

After four seasons with the Nuggets, he was hired by Bryan Colangelo of the Toronto Raptors as their director of global scouting. Ujiri became the Raptors’ assistant general manager in 2008, and returned to the Nuggets in 2010, when he accepted his position as executive vice president in charge of basketball operations.

On May 31, last year, Ujiri signed a five-year, $15 million deal to become general manager of the Toronto Raptors: “It was a difficult decision leaving Denver Nuggets, but because I had worked in Toronto, I’m familiar with the organisation, ownership and I was happy to go back,” he said.

Though his pet Africa Top 50 basketball is now in its 12th year, for him every home-coming is always great: “To come and be part of the camp we started several years ago is always great. The Top Fifty and Giant of Africa Camp mean a lot to me. It’s something that will always be close to my heart and I’ll always be close to home through this. I’d like to thank Nestle Milo for being a strong supper of the project and also Nike for their continuous support. It’s not only with what they have provided but the sustenance over the years; it’s always good to have sponsors that will continue to stay by you. Other than that, I’m glad to be here and we hope to always help these kids,” the first African-born general manager for an American major league sports team emphasized.

Continuing he said: “Obtaining a camp and giving young kids opportunity to better their lives gives me pleasure and I really want to thank all the coaches, especially the Proprietor of Dodan Warriors Basketball Club, Colonel Sam Amedu (rtd) and all the people that have really helped in keeping this camp going. I think the ground is the most special thing in the camp before finding and selecting players. The bottom line of this camp is for the kids to go to America but I have always told the kids that if they are good enough, they will end up doing something good with their life. I just wanted to create an opportunity for kids and now that I am back with a better opportunity.

I think we are going to broaden some of the things that we can do and one of the things we are going to really look at is developing out-do or courts and trying to make an impact with the facilities for these kids to play. That’s what on our minds and we are going to discuss this extensively obviously with my guys on ground. With Amedu and the coaches, we’ll try and put our resources together to see what we can do.”

On how Nigerian players can get into NBA through his influence and camp, the NBA Executive of the Year said: “I don’t think there has been any young Nigerian basketball player that is really good that hasn’t left the country.

If you are good enough, you will be found. However, our emphasis is on education and being prepared for what life is all about, that is what we are trying to teach these kids. The NBA has only 400 players and only a few players are going to make it. We are proud that a lot of them have gone through universities in the US. I have been a big influence on these kids in a big way, showing them that it is not only through basketball that they can make it.

One can also do other things outside basketball using the game as a tool and basketball can create that avenue just like what I’m doing now. We stressed the need for the participants to take their education seriously, as it was not possible for all of them to be drafted into the NBA league even if they play at colleges in the US.”

Kenyan lawmakers have traded blows and the deputy speaker had water thrown on her amid a chaotic parliamentary session called to push through a tough new security bill.

Opposition MPs shouted and ripped up copies of the bill, warning that Kenya was becoming a "police state".

Four lawmakers were assaulted and another two engaged in a fist-fight.

Parliamentary officials adjourned the debate twice, only for the chaos to continue when it resumed a third time.

The government says it needs more powers to fight militant Islamists threatening Kenya's security.

The al-Qaeda-linked al-Shabab group has stepped up its military campaign in Kenya, killing 64 people in two attacks in the north-eastern Mandera region since last month.

Policemen arrest a man protesting about controversial new security legislation outside parliament 18 December 18 2014 in Nairobi, Kenya

At one point, live television broadcasts of the debate were cut as the session degenerated into chaos, reports the BBC's Emmanuel Igunza from outside parliament.

A group of pro-government MPs accosted opposition senators who were in the public gallery and tried to eject them, he says.

In the ensuing commotion, one of the senators had his shirt torn, while outside the parliamentary chamber an opposition and pro-government MP threw punches at each other, he adds.

Opposition MPs threw water on Deputy Speaker Joyce Laboso and she ordered two of them to be thrown out, our reporter says.

Earlier, opposition MPs chanted "No way" and "The struggle continues" as they tore up copies of the bill.

There is a heavy police presence around parliament, after activists called for #OccupyParliament protests to show their opposition to the bill, our correspondent says.

Al-Shabab has increasingly targeted Kenya MPs were recalled from their Christmas break to approve changes to the bill passed last week.

The bill was denounced by the opposition as draconian and they fear that the proposed amendments will make it even worse.

It gives the security and intelligence agencies the right to detain terror suspects for up to one year, to tap communications without court consent and requires journalists to obtain police permission before investigating or publishing stories on domestic terrorism and security issues.

President Uhuru Kenyatta has defended the bill, saying it is important for the country's security needs.

ABUJA - Ebola caused the 2015 African Nations Cup to be moved from Morocco to Equatorial Guinea in a year which also saw Algeria and Nigeria reach the World Cup finals knock out stages.

The last 12 months also saw Al Ahly of Egypt complete their haul of continental trophies with its first victory in Africa's second-tier international competition, the Confederation Cup.

Ebola, which has killed more than 6,000 people in west Africa, was a headache for football's authorities, with fears about the disease's spread causing cancellations and multiple venue switches.

That culminated in Morocco, the hosts for the continent's showpiece tournament, backing out of the competition and forcing the Confederation of African Football (CAF) to find a new venue.

Oil-rich Equatorial Guinea stepped in at the last minute.

But there are concerns about whether the tiny nation, which co-hosted the 2012 edition with neighbouring Gabon, will be ready in time, with the competition slated to start on January 17.

Last time round, there were complaints about the high cost of living and limited hotel space.

"If I say there will be no problems, I would be lying," CAF president Issa Hayatou admitted in a recent interview.

"In two months we can't bring together everything that is needed without there being some imperfections. We'll do everything so we can save the essentials."

Shock exits

CAF had earlier stopped matches being played in Guinea, Sierra Leone and Liberia, where the deadly haemmorhagic fever has devastated the country's population and economies.

The three nations were forced to play their qualifying matches away from home but despite the odds, Guinea managed to make it through to the finals after a late rally.

By far the biggest shock in the AFCON qualifiers was the failure of seven-time champions Egypt and holders Nigeria to advance to the competition proper.

Senegal and Tunisia qualified ahead of the Pharaohs, whose last appearance in a competition they have dominated was in 2010 in Angola, where they won their seventh trophy.

Coach Shawkey Gharib, who succeeded the American Bob Bradley after another failed World Cup campaign last year, was fired as a result.

Nigeria's Super Eagles were meanwhile upstaged by a revived South Africa under new coach Ephraim "Shakes" Mashaba and Congo, despite reaching the last 16 of the World Cup finals with Algeria.

The north Africans, making their first appearance in the knock-out stages, were beaten by eventual champions Germany.

Nigeria's failure to qualify for the AFCON topped a torrid few months for the defending champions, with the country's football federation in turmoil and uncertainty over Stephen Keshi.

The coach was sacked then reinstated after the intervention of President Goodluck Jonathan but it is still not clear whether he will continue in the role.

Cash rows

Africa also grabbed the headlines in Brazil for the wrong reasons when Ghana -- quarter finalists four years ago in South Africa -- became embroiled in an unseemly row over appearance fees.

The government in Accra was forced to step in and fly more than $3 million in cash to South America on the eve of their must-win final group stage match against Argentina.

Black Stars players counted the money long into the night just hours before the game. The issue caused controversy back home with Ghana's economy squeezed by inflation and a depreciating currency.

Nigeria's government also had to intervene after players threatened to stage a boycott if they were not paid.

A bitter power struggle for control of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) meanwhile led to repeated threats of international sanctions from the game's world governing body FIFA.

In club football, Al Ahly delivered a stoppage-time winner to pip Sewe Sport of the Ivory Coast to win the only continental trophy that had eluded them -- the Confederation Cup.

The Egyptians already had eight Champions League titles, six African Super Cups as well as four trophies from the now-defunct Africa Cup Winners Cups.

"Ahly are a big club and our philosophy is to win more," declared a proud coach Juan Carlos Garrido after the dramatic cup final win.

Entente Sportive de Setif meanwhile clinched the more prestigious Champions League at the expense of AS Vita of DR Congo on the away goals rule to crown a fine run for Algerian football in 2014.
