The Super Eagles players who prosecuted Friday night’s ceremonial game against the Black Meteors of Ghana at the new 30,000 capacity Uyo International Stadium were paid the sum of 1,000 US Dollars as match bonus, SL10. ng can confirm authoritatively.
The match, which launched the opening of Nigeria’s latest sporting edifice – a world class stadium by every standards – was the first to be played at the arena and saw the home-based Super Eagles beat their Black Meteors counterparts 1-0, with home boy, Emem Eduok, scoring the first ever goal at the arena.
The 1,000 US Dollars aside, the players were also given N30,000 each for local travel expenses but SL10.ng understands that some of the established players in the team were surprised with the amount they received.
The said players, who have been with the main Super Eagles team, are used to collecting between 5,000 to 10,000 US Dollars as match bonus and are said to be disappointed with what they have been paid.
The home-based Super Eagles at the last CHAN in South Africa received 3,000 US Dollars as winning bonus and some of the players expected something closer to that figure.
“Some of the players, especially the more established ones were not very happy with the 1,000 USD they collected because they’re used to collecting higher and the game being a ceremonial one with so much activities, they expected some largesse from the Akwa Ibom State Government but I don’t know if I should say they’re disappointed.
